We would rather you came on a Tuesday. An open evening shows you a school at its best, which is exactly the problem: every school looks similar at its best.

Watch the corridors between lessons. Are students moving with purpose or being moved? Do they greet adults they are not being marked by?

Look at the walls. Whose work is on them — the top three in each year, or something closer to everybody? Is it this term's?

Ask a student what they are working on and let them talk for longer than is comfortable. The length of the answer tells you more than its content.

Ask us what we are not good at. Any school that cannot answer that question quickly and specifically has either stopped paying attention or is managing you.

And ask what happens when a child struggles — not academically, but socially, in the third week of a hard term. That answer is the school.
